As he walked his thoughts keep going back to the girl even though he repeatedly told himself now to worry what a likely pampered human child had said. ’Why am I letting it get to me? It’s not like I haven’t been thought of as an animal before for my bird features.’ He thought shaking his head. ’Still she didn’t have to look so disgusted… humans eat animals too after all.’

Looking down at the rabbit he sighed. So far no one else seemed to really care that he had it. He’d gotten a few looks sure, but that had been it. He’d even seen a few people he was sure wouldn’t have minded if he’d stopped to talk and share it with. If he’d been in a better mode he likely would have done just that, but at the moment he just didn’t want to mingle much.

As the morning got later he headed over to the gates. He wasn’t the only one to have gone over either. Seeing the crowd he decided to hang back a bit and wait where he was less likely to get bumped by a overly excited child.

As he watched them he found he couldn’t help but start to feel excited again. His worries about the rabbit started to fade. Smiling he hummed to himself as his mood improved. His humming faltered a bit as he saw the girl from before dart towards the gate, but after a moment it picked back up.

As he approached the crest of the hill, Roarke tried not to gawk as more of the great wheel came into focus. The giant rotating contraption seemed to be functional, revolving slowly on its great axis. In the wind, hollowed quarter-logs swung at the end of each spoke of the wheel. The steady creaking reminded him vaguely of a torture rack, and he averted his eyes from the memory. It wasn't best to dwell on dark thoughts, after all. They only clouded the mind, numbed the fingers.

Granted, this bit of Poppy's advice was taken a bit out of context, since Roarke planned to do a legitimate job this time around; but nonetheless he peeled his eyes away from the grass. He wasn't expecting any kind of part-time employment, because most merchants and craftsmen usually came with their own workers. Productive work was unfamiliar to him, anyways. His only plan at the moment was to beg from the roadside, with Lyre in hand. It was one of the few skills he had that he considered "marketable", other than being a hired hand for thievery.

It would seem as if he had reached the festival, judging from the throng of people ahead. A subconscious habit classified the crowd into groups, identifying the gullible, the young, the distracted. Poppy didn't usually work festivals, but to Roarke it felt like a glorified market day. He wondered if he felt more at home without Poppy's guidance in his ear. Acting solo was one thing, but he hadn't ever been alone in such a crowd. This emotion... didn't feel like fear, if that was any comfort. He almost dared... confidence? He readjusted his shoulder strap again as the smile grew. Yes, confidence.

Roarke could taste the excitement in the air, and he wondered hazily if it coincided with biting his tongue.

Iris gave a small bow, and with a smile, told him that her booth was located behind the Ferris Wheel and beneath a tree. With so few trees on the plains, Elister considered the woman quite lucky to have gotten such a choice spot. Then again, if she was truly dabbling in the arts and in painting, she would have needed a place to keep her wares out of the sun, lest they fade and degrade in their value.

As she ran off, Elister found himself alone once more, though he wasn't sure how to feel about it. He had become so accustomed to solitude that he almost welcomed it, but he almost missed the strange woman's eccentricities. She was strange, and that reminded him of himself.

But there was little time to worry about that now. The crowds were growing denser, and the festival seemed ready to open at any moment.

Elister drew his bag closer to his side, turned himself toward it, and began to walk. As he went, he bit into the food he'd been offered at last, made a weird face, and swallowed it down. He stared at it a moment, then shrugged. Food was food.

But ten minutes later, the guards, smiling, began to open up the gateway. Even before it had been unbarred completely, children were running forward, jumping over the fencing or slipping between the small opening in the gates.

Directly inside of the gates were rows and rows of benches and chairs nestled between beautiful floral arrangements and blossoming bushes. On either side of the main path, as well as directly in the center, were statues of the Goddess Trinity and baskets for offerings to be placed therein.

Up past the religious arrangement was the Ferris Wheel, stopped, and ready to accept passengers. The path there split, with the one on the left curving around to a gaming section, and the one to the right curving around to the place where all the shops and stalls had been set up.

The gaming section was fairly simple, with nothing too fancy, but enjoyable none the less. Features of this section were a horse shoe throw and a ring toss. Other staples included a stand where a player would throw a ball at a stack of cans to win a prize as well as an archery range, which was operated by a crank at the game's side which rotated images of wild beasts that wandered the land of Hyrule. Most of these games provided meager or no prizes, but that wasn't the point. The point was to have fun.

The shops and stalls were all encompassing, ranging from paintings to candy to home grown fruit or vegetables. Some sold stitchery, others linen, but all were open for business and eager for customers. In this section were specialty booths too, like face painters and custom cloth makers.

Directly behind the shops were displays where the owners of Lon Lon Ranch themselves sold their harvest to the public, as well as auctions off the largest and most grand of their crop. To the right of this display, directly in the center and back of the festival, was a stage where people could dress up in costumes and role play with one another.

Finally, on the right most side, to the left from the festival's entrance, was a roped off section of land connected to the ranch. From the ranch, through a gate, was a path for horses to come through to provide horse back rides.

Elister waited for the masses of people to enter the festival before he approached the entrance himself in earnest. He nodded to the guards as he passed through, then marveled at the religious display just inside.

As he walked along the pathway, he could see people dressed up in costume and greeting the guests. One man in particular stood out, dressed in a blond wig and green garb. A sword hung on his shoulder and a shield rested atop it.

The image was a familiar one. It was the image of the legendary hero, the man who was supposed to appear whenever there was war and bring peace to the land. It was a common image of the people of Hyrule, and it only made sense that someone would take on his form to greet the patrons of the festival.

As Elister advanced, the man in the green tunic approached him with a smile. "Costume contest tonight," he said, handing the fish man a printed scroll of paper detailing said costume contest. "Prizes and fun for all ages! If you need a costume, speak to one of our wonderful salesman in the shopping district!"

Elister gave the man a small style and continued along the path, gazing down at the flier as he went. He wasn't sure he'd dress up as anything, as he had little money, but perhaps attending the contest would be an enjoyable way to pass the night.

As soon as they entered the five children, including Laura, ran in different directions, causing Mrs. Cheila to let out a big sigh of annoyance. Mr. Cheila also sighed and went after in one direction while Mrs. Cheila went off in another direction, both trying to settle the children down.

While the two adults were busy with the other children, Laura ran off towards the Ferris Wheel, the giant attraction looming over the rest of the festival as it invited all guests to see the festival from an almost bird's eye view. Excited, Laura wraved her way through the crowds of people, almost getting knocked over a few times as she continued her path towards the Wheel.

However, there already seem to be a long line formed close to the wheel's base, full of excited children as well as their parents and some teens that were either in a group of four to five or paired together. Laura sighed but waited patiently in line, knowing that the wait will be worth the amazing view to come. As she waited, Laura lightly bounced on her feet in excitement.

"And then as the Hero raised his sword for the final strike, every muscle in his being begging for a rest, the Overlord cackled in triumph! For you see-"

But she was cut off. The gates were opening. She had been fortunate enough to remember to drop off her dagger with the appropriate persons after her first story, so she didn't have to deal with any unpleasantness at the gate.

"Overlord pulls a reversal on the Hero, Hero pulls a reversal reversal. The end- see you in the fair."

Mila took off quickly, leaving the children she was telling the story to dumbstruck. It wasn't very professional, of course, but she was just story-telling to kill time. If she wasn't the first in line for some food, she might not get any. On the other hand, however, most people had just eaten lunch and the massive wheel of Awesome would be occupied all day. She could still get a chance to eat after taking one little ride.

Her stomach growled at her again as she ran towards the Ferris Wheel.

"Look, I know I promised you but... WHEEL. Come on."

Her stomach growled once again.

"I'm doing this thing, and that's final. Worry not, Leonidas. I will get amounts of stewed cabbage to make you sick directly afterwords."

Her stomach seemed to like that idea. If there was anything better than stewed cabbage for lunch, she knew not what it was. It calmed the beast stirring within. She took her place in line next to a rather excited-looking child who appeared to be bouncing up and down on her feet in anticipation. Mila twirled her umbrella around a bit, and looked at the kid.

"I take it you're excited?" She asked, smiling.

She happened to be rather good at getting along with kids, considering she looked like one. Actually, besides the tendency to wear green and plausibly have a fairy around, there wasn't much difference between a Kokiri and a Hylian child. To the untrained eye, this is exactly what she looked like given that she had neither. As a matter of fact, until she learned about the existence of the Kokiri she just thought she had two genetic problems... as did most of the other children. It was fun, though, to play with kids. Mila was, after all, a child at heart.

"Whoa whoa whoa, kid." Roarke yelped as gauntlets pulled him sideways out of the crowd. He turned to face the guard, making no attempt to hide his annoyance. "Just relax. We don't allow weapons into the festival." The Hylian looked pointedly at the knife around Roarke's waist. Roarke quickly unstrapped the blade and sheath, wrapping a small dandelion around the hilt as he surrendered it. The guard looked thoughtfully at the white puff of seeds. "Alright, you can pass. You'll have to come back this way again if you want this back." He stepped aside, smiling graciously. "Have fun at the festival, kid. I suggest the Wheel, before tickets sell out." Roarke nodded with the barest of thanks, already one with the growing crowd.

Some of the tents were still hurrying to finish opening shop, but the fairgrounds were much improved from the teaser he had stumbled upon yesterday. White canvas and wooden stakes sprawled out as far as the eye could see. Peoples from every race milled about, bringing their share of excited chatter. The wait in line had conditioned him somewhat, but he still had to stop against a shop wall and breathe in order to comprehend it all. He adjusted the purple flower bulbs of his hat again. Going further with any more sensitivity would be catastrophic, he was sure.

"Oi, you! Get'ff my shop!" A hand lashed out from the other side of the sheet, making Roarke fall in surprise. The shopkeeper, a ruddy Goron, stepped around the canvas wall. "I see yer thiefy likes all around t'days! Scat!" No sense staying in his way. Roarke picked himself up and walked off briskly. He'd have to try elsewheres to get his pay.

"Or get food," his stomach objected plaintively. He had forgotten to eat this morning. Well, there's a few wasted Rupees... He opened his wallet. One hundred and... fifty, give or take. It'd get him far here, but he was still tight-fisted from his days with Poppy. He looked around halfheartedly, hoping to see a vegetarian section on a signboard somewhere, but he knew that the restaurants would focus around the biggest attraction here. At least it was a good landmark, if a bit imposing. He trudged off towards the giant rickety contraption. At least he couldn't hear the creaks as loudly anymore.

As the gates where opened Koda watched the crowd start to spill in to the festival grounds. Like them he was excited for it to finally start. Once most were in he made his way to the gates. He saw the guards stop a few people and take weapons away, but as he didn’t have anything he just received a nod and was let in.

Looking at the statues he made his way closer to look at it. He’d seen them before of course, but never one like these. They were woven out of a thick grass and where adorned with fruit and wild flowers. Unlike most he’d seen they were sitting and not standing with their gaze skyward. Making a silent prayer he pulled the rabbit he’d been planning to eat later off his bag and placed it next to the offering basket.

Feeling good, though a little hungry again he left the statue. Ahead of him he saw a man dress as the hero finish talking to a Zora. Seeing him the man smiled and came towards him. “Costume contest tonight.” He told him handing him a scroll. Koda looked at it as the man informed him he could buy a costume to enter it he needed.

“Alright, thanks.” He told the man, who went off to inform (or so Koda assumed as he wasn’t really watching) someone else. Not really sure if he wanted to enter he rolled the paper up and put it in his bag. Looking around he wondered what to do first. His eyes were drawn to the wheel of course but being able to fly he didn't find it as exciting those unable to might. Deciding to maybe ride it later he headed for the right path.

As he wondered around the shops though he couldn’t help but keep thinking about the contest, especially when he passed the costume shop. He didn’t really have the money to be spending on one but still he decided to have a look at what they had. Unsurprisingly most were made with a human or Hylian in mind. Even so he amused himself looked at the things they did have. If nothing else he could have gotten a green cloak and pointy green hat. He didn’t though to the disappointment of the shop owner. His stomach growling he left the costumes and started to follow his noise looking for something to eat.

The gates opened just as Dalia concluded that the potions were ready.  The red and blue potions bubbled to a simmer.  She closed the lid on top of both of them as she prepares for the sign.  From her bag with the firewood, the gerudo removed two extendable sticks with a large sign at the end of each.  Wasting no time, she plant it firmly to the ground next to their respective cauldrons.

[big][big]Dalia's Potion of Regeneration![/big]™[/big]

One drink and you will feel like dancing for three days straight!

Cost:  60 30 Rupees

Now half price!  For the festival only!

[small]Bring your own bottle[/small]

[big][big]Dalia's Potion of Rejuvenation![/big]™[/big]

One drink and you will feel like a Goddess!

Cost:  80 40 Rupees

Now half price!  For the festival only!

[small]Bring your own bottle[/small]

I ain't wasting rupees for boxes of bottles to go with my potion.  Dalia opened the cauldron to meet with a sweet scent, hoping to lure anybody, specifically older men and women to approach closer with their wallets waiting.  She stirred the blue potion more and more, looking quite busy with her fantasies in her head.  At the same time though, she wonders about thieves.  Dalia immediatly wiped that from her mind.  Tch.  What kind of idiots would scoop their hands in this stuff?!  If they do...  She looked behind her where her broom layed.  I'll have a new subject to my experimental potions.  She resisted the urge to cackle out loud and settled for  a grin on her frail wrinkly face.

Her stomach growled at the realization that she didn't eat at all today.  She returned the growl to her stomach.  "Shut up!  You'll have something to eat later!"  She hissed, hoping no one would notice her talking to herself.  The gerudo elder continued stirring with a smile one her face.

Queen of Ice     Mar 11 2011, 06:57 PM

Elister felt a little overwhelmed as he continued along the pathway and the looming wheel became more and more the focus of the skyline. It seemed like it was growing with every step he took, enlarging before his very eyes. It also seemed like most of the patrons of the festival, especially those of the younger crowd, were flocking to the wooden contraption. Elister found it intriguing, but he wasn't sure he wanted to use his precious few rupees on a ride. Besides, while it would be something else to go up in the air like that, he very much preferred to be closer to the ground. He was used to swimming in bodies of water, which rested in the earth. He preferred to be closer to home in that regard. Being up high like that would probably scare him.

So while all those people began to line up, he turned to the right, and began to wander down the path toward all the shops and stalls. He figured he could have gone to see the games, but again, his precious rupees may have burned a hole in his bag. He couldn't afford to waste them on trivialities. He would use them on food, and nothing more. Although the scroll provided to him by the man in the Hero costume was tempting. There couldn't be many costumes that would fit a fish man like him, with his rough scales and spiny arms, but there was surely something he could rest on his head or around his waist. He might look silly, but at least he would sort of fit in at the costume contest. Not that he thought he'd win either. It was just an excuse to mingle with others.

There were a lot of stalls and stands to choose from. It was almost hard to stay focused on one for more than a short period of time. One that did manage to catch his attention was a potion shop which was selling red and blue potion but was not providing bottles which to keep it in. The prices were good, at least he seemed to think, but how could the gerudo woman hope to make any money if there were no containers for her wares? Did people really carry around empty bottles like that? A quick look around informed him that indeed, some people did, though most were filled with water. Regardless, he had no use for such stock, so he turned his gaze from the colored liquids to a large, covered stand across the path. There were some costumes and accessories being sold there, and so he took a step forward.

Then he stopped, and gazed back toward the wheel. Hadn't Iris said that her shop was set up behind it? Biting his lip, he wondered if he should just give up on the idea of the dress up show and head over there to see her. He felt obligated to at least attempt to provide patronage for having accepted her odd sandwich.

Laura turned to the girl that spoke to her, hoping to start a conversation to pass the time. The girl had very pale skin, white hair that was two feet long, and very pale blue eyes. She was wearing a black miniskirt with matching knee-high socks and a red blazer with a white button-down shirt.

"Of course I am!" Laura said in a very excited voice. "My name is Laura by the way... Who might you be?"

Laura gave the girl a small smile before noticing Mrs. Cheila running by, chasing after one of the other kids. They both disappeared in the throngs of people gathered by the games section.

"Wow... Mrs. Cheila certainly doesn't give up..." Laura thought to herself. "Glad she's not chasing me"

Then Laura noticed the line move as the people in front got on the wheel, so she moved forward before turning back to the girl she was talking to, now only having two people in between them and the wheel.

Mila, too, moved forward. It looked like there were only a couple of people in between the two girls and Awesome giant-wheelness.

"Lucky me! She seems not to care about my condition, and also appears to be a talker. I can monologue well- I do it all the time when I tell stories. A normal conversation isn't something I have much practice with, though. If I want to make a friend, which I promised I would do by the end of this festival, I'll need to dive in though."

She smiled gently back at Laura and replied "Well, hello Laura. My name is Mila Keaton- professional weaver of legends and sculptor of pork. I am able to tell riveting tales of blatant heroism whilst carving a very large ham into a beautiful cucco."

Another little habit of hers- following her real job with both a false and utterly ridiculous one. It was more or less a jest of sorts, but the way she told it was utterly convincing. Her sense of humor really needed some work. Regardless, now that Mila was speaking with the girl she was able to take a better look at her.

"Long black hair, beautiful blue eyes, tan skin... she is almost like my physical opposite. Is that a flower in her hair? Oh, and what a pretty purple dress... cute, I think. That is what one would call a girl like this. She is definitely cute, and I am her opposite. I guess that would make me ugly, but I knew that beforehand. That is what THEY called me, at least... so why am I not sad? This girl's happiness... I think it is contagious. For some reason, I cannot help but smile. I think it would be nice to have a friend like this."

The purple bulbs shuddered violently. Roarke could barely hold his hat to his head as he veered towards the great black cauldrons. Red and blue liquids simmered thickly in the hot iron, the flowers atop his head vibrating with memory. Roarke took a sinful pleasure in the potions that Poppy would buy for him. Whenever he lacked sleep, Poppy would buy a potion for him as a little pick-me-up, likening it to a cheap energy drink. He always ended up collapsing later in the day, at which point he would remember why he hated the stuff. Still, the immediate effect was enticing.

He looked up at the Gerudo woman, with a sheepish snuff. Her eyes were bright with cheer, but some of the translation was lost in her aged features. A little younger and she'd look more friendly, but the unflattering robe and hard whisk broom made her look... well, witchy. Roarke thought it was a good PR move on her part, by fitting the costume with the job. Although, a certain Poppy in him recognized the greed of her eyes as very real.

Roarke leaned over to read the signpost, straightening up at the figure of 40 rupees. Empty bottle or not, he wasn't about to waste a good third of his Wallet for something so fleeting. He needed to get some real food in his stomach, not magical energy, and 40 rupees was enough to buy food for three times the potion's length. He tried to explain as much to the witch, but couldn't on account of those eyes hounding his every move. He resigned to a simple turn and walked away.

The central square would be close now. He could see individual passengers in the wheel, and he marveled at all the people so excited to ride the wooden deathtrap. Something so big and tall was bound to fall on somebody, and there would be very little room to maneuver between the tents when it happened.

As he wondered around looking for something to eat, not that he was seeing really seemed all that good to him at the moment. In the end he ended up getting a few veggies and fruits to eat from a produce stand he found behind the other shops. He got some for later too in case later when he was hungry again the food stands still seemed unappealing. After handing over a blue rupee and some change he put the food in his bag and munching on an apple started back though the shops.

On his way to back he caught the scent of something on the air again. It didn’t smell the most appetizing but it did smell interesting so he wondered around till he found it. A shop selling potions. It even came with a witch to sell them. As he read the signs by the potions he couldn’t help but wonder if she’d need a costume if she wanted to enter the contest.

Deciding to go before she got annoyed for him just looking, mostly at her, and not buy anything he backed away. And bumped into someone.

“So sorry.” He said turning to around. Behind him as a purple Zoras and somewhat dry looking Zoras. “You alright? I didn’t mean to bump into you. I was distracted… by thinking the owner of the potion stand could enter the dress up contest as is.” The last bit he said quietly, not really wanting the old woman to overhear in case that was her normal dress.

“Would you accept an apple as an apology?” He asked opening his bag and pulling one out. Inside the few other things he’d gotten could be seen. “I just got them at the Lon Lon stand so they’re fresh.”

(He has 4 apple at 50 cents each, 4 cucumbers at 50 cents as well, and a bundle of carrots at 1.50. so 5.50 total)

Iris was alone in her stall, with the exception of the crowds passing by. However, that was physical presence, not social or emotional. And trust me, Iris was needing quite a bit of that kind of support right now. The passerby's were sparing her so much as the occasional passing glance, but no more than that.

The artist had displayed her wares, but clearly no-one was interested... Keep your chin up, girl! It's only the start of things right now! With newfound courage obtained from a self-inclusive pep-talk, Iris put on a beaming face to anyone who looked her way.

One way Iris happened to be looking was at a man walking by that appeared to be advertising a costume show. so... Like a skit of one of those old fairy tales? Such was taken by the image the man gave, bearing the clothes of green. As much as Iris would have loved to participate... she needed to work, and probably didnt have the money for it. Well, not counting her cash box for change

Elister was a perfect mixture of very surprised and not at all surprised when someone walked into him and snapped him out of his dazed stupor in the middle of the aisle. He should have known better to just stand there, but at the same time he wasn't expecting someone to be so rude or out of it as to not see where he was going.

When the individual apologized, Elister turned around to meet his gaze, only to find himself surprised once more by who, or what, had perpetrated the "crime."

He was about to speak, but the bird was talking first, saying something about being distracted because of thinking that the owner of the potion shop could enter the costume contest as she was. To this, Elister's mouth dropped open a little, and he stared the rito in the eyes, somewhat taken aback.

How rude . . .  he thought, peering past him to the woman, unsure if she was aware of what an offense she had just been granted.

When the rito procured an apple and asked for forgiveness, Elister looked back at him. What a . . . strange . . . person.

Elister accepted the apple, but he just held it thereafter, unsure that he should even be taking it at all.

Keeping his voice low, he said with with a bit of a bite, "Perhaps you should share with the potions master what you so kindly shared with me. I'm sure she would love to know what high hopes you hold of her potential for victory. . . ."
